Want to understand more about project-based learning, impact projects, design thinking and social innovation? This workshop will provide a hands on introduction to design thinking and how to use it to power up project-based learning and/or impact projects in your school.

Attend this masterclass to find out how to design and implement a version of project-based learning or impact projects that is right for your school and context.

9:45 | Session 1: WHY: Understanding the power of Impact Projects

In this session Claire will share her experience as foundation Deputy Principal at Hobsonville Point Secondary School and now Principal at Albany Senior High School - two school which are recognised for their groundbreaking commitment to project-based learning and Impact Projects. Claire will share the approaches of each school and an argument why all students should be engaged in large scale, long term projects that connect them with their wider community.

12:00 | Session 2: WHAT: Understanding Design Thinking for project-based learning

In this session attendees will participate in a mini Design Thinking Challenge that will support them to understand how design thinking can be used to support impact projects and project-based learning. Participants will develop an understanding of the need to empathise, define, ideate, prototype and testing so as to design a potential solution for the problem of their choice. The challenge will focus on community issue and will look at developing solutions with a social innovation lens

  • Develop an understanding of social innovation
  • Gain practical strategies for implementing design thinking and project-based learning or impact projects in their classroom or school.

1:45 | Session 3: WHAT AND HOW: Understanding Design Thinking for project-based learning

In this session we will will complete the mini design thinking challenge and will then have time to design a design thinking challenge for your context. We will look at ways design thinking and project-based learning can support STEAM or STEM initiatives as well.

  • Understand the design thinking framework
  • Develop an understanding of social innovation
  • Gain practical strategies for implementing design thinking and project-based learning or impact projects in their classroom or school.
  • Understand how design thinking and project-based learning and impact projects can support STEAM and STEM initiatives.
  • Be ready to facilitate project-based learning or impact projects with a social innovation lens.
